| Run first, pet later, that is the sad rule of survival when a strange virus has turned simple cat cuddles into the trigger for a global “nyandemic,” where anyone who touches a cat becomes one. Humanity has mostly fallen, cities have gone quiet, and the streets now belong to roaming herds of irresistibly cute felines, while the last human survivors hide in shadows and barricaded corners trying not to give in to their urge to scoop them up. At the center of the chaos is Kunagi, a young man with no memory of his past but an almost uncanny knowledge of cat behavior, which lets him read tiny tail flicks and ear twitches that can mean the difference between escape and getting transformed. He drifts through this cat ruled landscape with other stragglers, dodging fluffy “ambushes,” exploring abandoned shelters and city blocks, and trying to protect both his humanity and the animals he still loves. The show leans into comedy and parody, treating the setup like a send up of zombie apocalypse stories where the moaning hordes are replaced by meowing ones, yet it keeps a real sense of danger in every soft paw step and purr. Adapted from Hawkman and Mecha Roots’ manga, it mixes post apocalyptic dread with the simple daily problems of not having snacks, not having safe beds, and not being allowed to touch the one comforting creature always stretching a paw toward you. Each episode plays with the same question in different ways, from cramped hideouts to open streets packed with cats, always asking how long people can resist when survival means saying no to everything they want to say “here kitty” to.
