| Autumn shadows lengthen across the suburban streets of Misaki Town as anemic high schooler Shiki Tohno returns to the austere mansion of his estranged family following eight years of banishment. A catastrophic childhood injury left him cursed with sight that perceives dark fissures cutting through the fabric of all matter, a terrifying visual affliction kept in check solely by specialized glasses given to him by a traveling mentor. Stepping back into high society under the watchful, rigid oversight of his younger sister Akiha, Shiki struggles to adjust to the oppressive silence of the ancestral manor and the sudden onset of dizzying headaches. A fleeting walk home from school unravels his fragile control when an inexplicable, violent trance seizes his body, driving him to corner a blonde stranger on a deserted avenue and sever her body along the lines of demise etched into her flesh. Horror and guilt consume him until the following morning, when the very woman he butchered, a regal entity named Arcueid Brunestud, appears alive and waiting outside his school gates. Revealing herself as a vampire of royal lineage, Arcueid binds the traumatized youth to her side as a bodyguard and tracker, demanding his unique optical anomaly to hunt the nocturnal predator stalking the city. Torn between keeping up ordinary appearances alongside his cheerful schoolmate Ciel and patrolling midnight alleyways bathed in blood, Shiki descends into an urban underworld where every shadow conceals predatory malice. Each skirmish pushes his deteriorating physique closer to collapse, blurring the line between his conscious humanity and the feral killer awakening beneath his skin. With monstrous serial killings terrorizing the populace and the Tohno family harboring secrets of their own, Shiki must navigate the lethal twilight to ensure both he and the enigmatic princess survive the night.
