Future of Hi10 Anime

We wanted to upgrade to a Gigabit server starting from this month, but sadly we didn't get enough donations to pay our current servers for the next month either, so we've decided to create a poll, and ask you visitors how the site should continue.

The gigabit server could be managed from around $350 / month, which isn't much more then our current $220 / month donations, but the download speed would be 10 times faster (100 mbit -> 1000 mbit), besides that we could have a more stable, better server.

Switching to the new server would have a +$100 additional cost for the first month, as setup-price. Which means, that in the first month we'd need $450, and after that $350/month, but currently we only have $74.29 for the next month + the income from ads.

The income from the ads is the following: ad.fly already paid us $30 dollars for the first (partial) month when we started using it, and they should pay ~$50 in a few days. Clicksor still didn't paid us a penny, but supposedly we have around $60 unpaid for their ads(?).

So currently we don't even have enough money to pay the current (100mbit) servers, which means that if us (the staff) doesn't pay the remaining amount the downloads won't be available from next week.

Upgrading like this is very doubtful, so we're not sure what to do, and we decided to make a poll to ask you, visitors, of your opinion:

1) Stay with the current servers, everything will be as it is, downloads will be slow, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't (that's because we have to fix them, manually sometimes -> no available staff = no downloads). So nothing will be improved, upgraded, or anything, and if we don't get enough donations the site can probably only shut down.
2) Cancel our DDL servers, the website should remain as it is, and use Fileserver downloads + Torrents, this can be done easily, as it doesn't cost much money.
3) Go for the Gigabit (if we can pay it somehow), and up the monthly donations to $350 / month, while we can provide 10 times (or even) faster download speeds, and a stable server. Like this the site could improve, and we probably would have more visitors, even though this is a big risk in itself, if we can't pay it, we can go back to the current (100 mbit) servers for $220 / month, but if we don't even get that much donations we can only shut down, or use fileservers, like in the previous options.

What should we do with the website?

* We'd like to try Option 3, but please understand that it is only doable if we get enough Donations... sadly the income in April was unusually small.

  1. You could use Torrent to aid the download similarly to how most other anime fansubs perform. Secondly, switch Clicksor to another advertiser such as Adsense or Adbrite. There are numerous reports that Clicksor rewards horrible amount of money when compared to the traffic you received on this site.

    1. The problem is that they should’ve already sent $25 because we started to use it in the previous month, but they still didn’t sent anything.
We hope they will send it this time, because supposedly they send the money in the beginning of the month, if not we’ve displayed their ads for nothing.

  2. I voted for the “remain as it is,” how can i even donate while I’m just a student? I don’t have prob with the ads, any site uses it.

If the 2nd choice won though, I suggest you use the MEGA.CO.NZ (The new megaupload) coz it would be hell if DCMA attacked this site (I wonder why DCMA not yet attacked you)

I also suggest to consider removing animes which are half-assed and just reencode cool/cute animes Well, this is just my opinion.

    1. The only problem with Mega is the limited file size for accounts, so we would need lots of them. And we would need to remember every single password for them, since mega doesn’t do password resets.

I don’t think everyone can access it as well.

As for the DCMA, they probably check out the site when it isn’t working :V

      1. Yeah, don’t use filehosting sites. B4 i came to this site, I DL anime from minitheatre.org which also reencode decent quality. The only prob is the link was always deleted due to infringement.

Just a question, what will happen if you use PURE TORRENT? Can users achieve speeds like DIRECT DL using torrent alone? If u only use TOR, will the monthly payment decrease, lets say 50 USD???

  3. Regarding upgrading the site to a gigabit server, i think due to a lack donations, upgrading would probably have to be put off until Hi10 can reach the target amount each month consistently.
I’ve enjoyed interacting with the staff who work hard to encode our favorite anime and are really friendly from what I’ve seen (and awesome too!) I discovered this site around the start of the year and have been downloading ever since, the encode’s are amazing compared to what I’ve come across, and if possible i’d like to stay around as long as possible.
Since keeping the server costs approximately $220 USD, i’m willing to pay around 30-60 AUD (31.06- 62.12 USD) per month to help alleviate the costs of keeping up the servers. This is my appreciation and thanks to all Hi10 staff/encoders for spending a lot of time and effort to bring us such great quality anime with low file sizes, best I’ve ever seen! This means though that i will forfeiting lunch money a few times a week (i’m still in high school and don’t work) to help fund this site, but in the end i believe it’s a worthy long-term investment. I truly appreciate all of the anime that is held on the current servers, and it would be a shame if they were to disappear due to lack of funding, i’ll do my best to donate!

    1. I’m also thinking that we should go with the gigabit, but if we don’t get enough money until tomorrow we won’t be able to pay the server. Also, we have to pay the setup cost for the first month too, so it’s even more money for the first time.
We’ve been planning to do it, and everything is already taken care of, “only” the money is missing to start it… sadly we didn’t even though that we will get so little donations this month.

We’re also a little afraid that even if we pay the money from our own pocket this time, will people really donate $350/month, or can we shut down the whole site next month with the gigabit server? That wouldn’t be too good either…

      1. hmm but if this site shut down next month will it be up again ?and will all the anime uploaded in this site can be downloaded again?

        1. If it gets shut down that means it won’t be up again, as we won’t start again from 0.
If we don’t pay the servers everything will be deleted, so you won’t be able to download anything.

        2. How about we get around 10 or more people to donate 10 per month (including the approximate 60 dollars im planning to donate) and whatever’s needed to pay the servers you could use the money from ad’s!

        3. Of course, the whole idea from upgrading to gigabit was that we’ll use the April donations + the money from ad’s! But, the donations are awfully bad this month, and ad.fly didn’t paid the money for April yet, while clicksor didn’t even pay the money for March yet…
We can pay the amount from the ads for starting up the new server, but adding $74.29 from Apr and the money we currently got… around $200 is still missing.
At least if we had the monthly goal things could be much easier now…

        4. I don’t think we should jump the gun and think about the new server, instead working out how we can keep the current one alive 😛

        5. You may be right, though it’s sad that things turned out like this. If we don’t get enough support today we probably won’t switch to gigabit.
Even if we paid the missing amount from our own money, like this we probably wouldn’t get enough donations in the upcoming months either.

        6. hmmm well judging from the donations, is Hi10 in danger this month?

        7. also, if you can keep the site from shutting down with the next 2 weeks, i reckon i could donate soon, so please guys don’t give up!

      1. I’ve asked Kanri to check it, though I don’t really understand how we can register there, but Kanri is managing the money, so he can hopefully do it.

    1. YEAH this is a good idea for us!

I’m just a student but maybe I can help a little if I have some in me because I’m visiting and using the site.

I vote as is because we cant just jump to the decision of upgrading to Gigabit server and using the staffs pocket money, we’re not sure if they can receive the right donation amount next month.

And I don’t think that using file servers is a good idea because fileservers deletes the files rarely used by the users (just my opinion).

    2. Good Idea, with that idea all asian region can donate easily just like me I’m from Philippines and I don’t have paypal.

Maybe I can help a little if that idea will implemented.

I vote “Everything stay as it is”, I really don’t like the idea to jump to gigabit server it will only cause a lot of problem like insufficient money to pay for the server and the site maybe shut down. 🙁

And I think the idea “Use Fileservers” maybe not a bad idea in my opinion however the only problem of using fileservers is the file is often or not even download and the file will deleted.

Sorry if my English grammar is wrong. 🙁

  4. The presence of the ads has recently been obtrusive enough that I’m reasonably sure it costs you much more money than you say it provides. I was e.g. unwilling to recommend your site to people I know any more when I’d have to list a complex set of instruction for *how* to be able to download something (“use Firefox, not Chrome, left-click, don’t right-click, wait 5 seconds then click to proceed again, then press Ctrl+S to actually save the file provided, then close tab and repeat for next file you want); and I’m sure many people must have left and new people would have not stuck around when they encountered such problems.

And it only gave you 20 dollars or so a month? Really? That’s less than I donated back in December (before the ads). Do you have donation statistics for before/after these ads? I suggest examining removing the ads altogether, if they seem to cost more from lost donations than they provide.

As a second step, if donations don’t pick up, use the torrents+Fileserver solution. That’s what I’ll vote for.

    1. Many visitors recommended the use of the ads, there was even a poll about it, and 80% recommended to use ads. Since adfly pays very small amount of money for indonesia/malaysia, etc and we have most of our visitors from there it doesn’t pay much. It’s hard to say the exact amount for a month, as clicksor didn’t sent anything yet, but for a full month I think we could get nearly $100 with adfly+clicksor (if they really will pay).

We started to use ads because otherwise we usually didn’t get enough donations to pay the servers, and we would have to shut down the website already… so it was needed, sadly. If there would be enough donations we would be happy to remove the ads (I hate them too, for example).
You can check every donations in the “Donation” menu to see how much donations we got in the different months, if you’re interested.

      1. hey sync.. do you know why the most visitor comes from indonesia… cuz in this damn country internet speed is very slow and its so damn expensive.. (i live in indonesia)..
i can say that indonesia has the slowest internet speed all over the world, and has the most anime fans than another country.. maybe cause they love japan a lot like me..

when they love anime, and have slow speed to download that.. surely without doubt they will download from this site, that provide the best quality mini mkv anime… ( especially BD 1080 release)

IMO when someone has a decent internet speed i think they will download anime direct from fansub, cuz its provide an exellent quality (especially new anime in 2013), thats why visitor from another country is less than indonesia..
        8)

        1. 500KB/s – 1MB/s is slow i think, you cannot say its decent, of course if U live in indonesian’s that speed feels like god speed..

i think the only reasons U download from here is just for spent your HDD, that surely makes no sense and think want to re-watch a good anime over an over and just for wasting time, and the day for you to re-watch that good anime is never come…

think twice bro.. there’s lot of new anime comes from japan every week ( anime in japan is like Pisang Goreng in indonesia ), there’s lot of it.. and its such a waste for U and your time if U watch a re-encoded version of that good anime

if i have a decent download speed, i will directly download it from fansub,, watch it 2-3 times and delete it… unless U are RICH enough to buy a new HDD or burn it to DVD which is wasting time …
          🙂

  5. I want to donate but Paypal doesn’t work where I live…

I love hi10anime because of the awesome encodes and DDLs, I hope things work out

  6. While I’d love to get a taste of the gigabit server, I have to face the truth that I’m not the one who donates (and probably won’t be). So the right course of action would be opting for 3rd party filehosts instead.
While there are many filehosts, we have to choose the one that benefits all and doesn’t frequently show captchas and timers and doesn’t rant everywhere about advantages of a premium account. And the ideal candidate for that is “Mediafire”. So instead of investing what little donation you get on servers, use the money to buy a premium mediafire account and start uploading there. But mediafire is pretty feisty about copyrighted contents. But it is also easy to dodge by creating compressed encrypted “.rar” files with filenames beginning with signs like “delta”, “omega” etc. completely unrelated with the content. Believe me it has been done.
So a right filehost can solve many problems. Best of luck.

  7. If you’re getting a lot of traffic from Indonesia, look into other payment options other than Paypal, which can be quite restrictive on countries – that could potentially improve the ability for people to donate.

Also, maybe have some sort of bonus for donators, and tie it to their WordPress account name in some way? Might encourage people to donate, and advertise these potential benefits.

Also, do you know if adblock is potentially an issue too? I know several sites have some adblock/noscript detectors where you could (politely) ask that adblock users put hi10 on their whitelist. Personally I’ve got hi10 on my whitelist to support the site, and I donate, but others may not, and it could be putting a bit of a dent in the ad revenue.

    1. While it’s impossible to tie up WP account name for those who donate, I think they are able to gives out those who donate an exclusive avatar to represent that they are donators.

For the ads, if you have adblock on, you still can help this site by opening up in Incognito (Chrome) or Private (Mozilla), which will disable most add-ons and doesn’t store cookies. This means you can simultaneously open up new links, without fearing that the site will redirect you to hotlinking page due to adblock or have the ads locked due to opening too much adf.ly page at one time. This trick will not require you to whitelist this site or turn off your adblocks, but might not work on several advanced adblock add-ons. One thing you need to make sure that you don’t give those add-on any permission to run during Incognito/Private mode.

  8. I really hope you don’t shut down. The great thing about this site it’s that it has its own server, filehosts would kill the site. I think I do what I can to help (I seed all torrents to 1:1 and click the ads from time to time). I’m donating right now, I don’t have much but hope it helps you guys.

  9. I think using the adf.ly shouldn’t be any problem.
I did encounter the problem of keeps giving me the waiting page even after 1 hour I finish download.
What I did was I add “?t=e” (without the quotes) at the end of the link.
    For example,
    http://adf.ly/4400856/http://adf.ly/4400856/http://hi10anime.uni.cx/kazz/%5BHi10%5D_Chihayafuru_Season2_%5B720p%5D/(Hi10)_Chihayafuru-Season2_-_11_(720p)_(Commie).mkv?t=e
I don’t know whether it’s works for you, but it’s works for me everytime.
So I hope admin can consider using the adf.ly service again, to earn some income and update the server in future.
Currently, I think the server remains the same is fine.

    1. Open the links in Incognito (Google Chrome) or Private Browsing (Mozilla Firefox) mode, and you are able to open the ad page without altering the original URL. Unfortunately, for those who using Safari, you still required to use this trick, since you cannot access a link directly into a new Private Browsing window from right-clicking.

  10. I see…., the annoying clicksor still haven’t pay anything to Hi10.
    That’s why Hi10 had to use Ad.fly.
BETTER-NOT using fileservers, they either delete old files or DMCA.
Using them Hi10 will receive more request to re-uploads.
It’s best to stay as it is, UNLESS suddenly someone SO GENEROUS to donate more.

  11. Dear Admins and Fellow Users,

Hi10anime.com is not just a website, it’s a way of life. The sheer amount of work and passion that you guys have put into your website and what you’ve done for your followers is far from anybody else on the Internet. The difference between this website and the others is that there’s more of a mutual appreciation going on here. We’re all drawn in by our communal interests but it would be a great shame if such a fraternity were to fade away due to economic constraints.

Let me first commend the Admins here, they are so dedicated and passionate that they are paying from their own pockets sometimes, to provide us a service beyond the greater good; to bring us countless hours of anime fun and prevent us all from buying new hard drives. That’s just ridiculous. Apart from applauding their selflessness, it should strike a chord with all of us. That here’s a bunch of fine gentlemen – and they deserve more than just an applause. I know a whole lot of visitors are students and young dudes on budgets, the global economy is all banged up nicely – but if every one of us were send a dollar their way this will never happen.

I realise talk is cheap and I should have donated earlier. I plan to do so this month onwards, and on a regular basis now that things have come to this. The last thing I want to see is a post of desperation from admirable people. So, this is the solution.

I may have given a differing feedback many a times before, but after much contemplation on how we should all move forward, let me reiterate now: the ads are very obtrusive, and they take the fun away from this awesome parcel of happiness. I’d say, go for the Gigabyte upgrade, and get rid of the ads. Scrap it. For the paltry amount you get per month – and the annoyance it causes, it’s just not worth it. Second, going all torrents ain’t a good idea either – dead torrents and low seeders abound. But before that, let’s go on a fund raiser campaign. If it takes 400 dollars to keep things running smoothly and the end of everyone’s worries, remember people, that’s just 10 dollars from 40 people per month – and let’s face it, that’s nothing. Even better, 5 from every 80 people – and you’ll see that compared to the number of visitors, that’s a small percentage.

Here’s what we can do. Let’s come up with a list of signees.. people who can commit to pay from 5 or 10 dollars/15 dollars minimum and let them specify how many times a year (how many months) they can do it. We can create a forum thread or a dedicated post for this. Let those said guys take turns.. say I can commit to atleast the next 6 months etc.. and then we will all have a clear picture. We can plan accordingly and forecast this shit. They can pay monthly, alternative monthly, quarterly, whatever. Call them VIP users or whatever, ensure they get faster download speeds via separate DLL access (maybe..just throwing things around, don’t know if that’s possible) Apart from this, everyone, regardless of if they have PayPal or not, must find the means to contribute, even if it’s 5 dollars a month. Hell I had heaps of issues and got my PayPal done, so it’s not undo-able. Online Money Transfer is still shaky, so I don’t know on that front – but it’s an added bonus, as you will get many payments from our Asian brothers.

Leaving things as it is ain’t teh best solution for the future, it’s the same as saying let’s revert back to Torrents and keep all things dandy. It doesn’t work that way Gents.

Let’s pull our socks up and get this done.

    1. Hahaa i pride myself on my english and i’ve been bested, extremely well worded and summed up in a way i would have if i added some extra time… In any case i reckon this would be a good plan to consider in future, and as you can see i believe the poll will be deciding Hi10’s fate for now.

      1. Valkrax, I’m sure you best me in a whole lot of other things ; ) Let’s see what the majority vote will be, but I hope we head to a permanent solution. This website is a beauty.

        1. hahahaa you’re far too kind ^__^ and yes i wholly agree with that sentiment, this site truly is a beauty 🙂

    2. I’d love to donate, although I know I can’t do it in regular basis. However, PayPal doesn’t work very well for my country. If they add another options for donating and its work well for my country, I’ll definitely donate to this site, since I already using this site for almost one year, yet I haven’t give anything back to the admins.

  12. So, this is my first comment here. I’ve been visiting the site for more than a couple of months now and have been watching episodes from here from time to time. I usually use other sites that use online play of anime which get uploaded faster and which start instantly. But the reason that brought me back here every time was the fact that the quality is great, the files are really small and there are many anime taken off dvd and blu-ray (so exclusive/uncensored content).

I will probably donate a very little this month and also suggest some ideas the admins could take into account.

The problem seems to refer to traffic and payment. I am guessing that the traffic is very high the first few days on an episode after it is released, add all the new ones up together, plus the category of older downloads (episodes/ full finished anime), and that would be your traffic. So, if I am right about the things in my last sentence, then this might solve some issues:

You could focus more on the torrent part for the large traffic episodes you release (that was the hole purpose of torrent in the begging, torrent gets faster with more users, servers get slower with more users). Simply add the torrent link before the direct down link the first few days (1-2 days of only torrent, and after that both links can be available). Add the download link in the first 1-2 days for the people that donate, it’s just a way for the users that don’t want to seed, open the torrent, etc. to get want they want and help the servers and the staff. The donation can be more of a representative/custom thing with the recommended amount something like 1 $ or something small. And have a monthly phrase to get access to that “launch” day direct download link :D, something that you find out after you donate and use on this site to get said access.
Or another way would be to hide that direct down link under more shells of adds. The first day behind 3-4 shells, the second 2-3 shells, and normally behind the one default shell. This would be for the people that are not able to donate or torrent but still want good quality encodes.

So, here is my 2 $, hope any of my tips helps and keep up the great work, on behalf of the silent lurkers out there 😀 . Oh, and please add a separate rating top of the current season or latest releases, kind of hard to find out what is good to watch anymore (ongoing anime I mean).

  13. This is just my opinion, and as a regular here, I voted for things to just stay as it is, but I would also love to have that upgrade since, truth be told, the speed really is slow. But with the current visitors of the site, as we all know, may probably consist most of students, it’d be hard for an upgrade, as well as any donations since most doesn’t have the money to donate.

Thinking about it, either the stay as it is option or the use of other file-hosting sites would be logical. Don’t know about how others would feel, but I think, so that it wouldn’t be too hard on our encoders/servers, it’d be best if the option for now is the use of other file-hosting sites. I mean, there wouldn’t be any need for donations, or maybe there will be, just that there will be times that the files will removed and it would be hard. But at least, it wouldn’t cost too much money. If I am to suggest any, I think Zippy, Filecloud, Bitshare, Filefactory, Depositfiles, Solidfiles, Mega, or what else is out there that provides unlimited storage would be beneficial.

This is just my opinion, so that’s it. I mean, I just don’t want to stop downloading from this awesome site. Nobody does now, don’t they?

  14. This is literally the best Anime DDL site I’ve ever seen. First of all, you guys are famous for your best Hi10 encodes of Anime on the internet. Second, you provide a DDL, and third, its free for us users!

As Hi10 has made its way up here keeping DDLs and torrents, I’d suggest you to continue the way it is. Yes, the speeds may be slow sometimes, but ultimately the users get what they need in one of the best qualities available on the internet for the file-size you guys provide, so for me, time isn’t even worth considering. You can always leave your downloads on while you sleep.
Using file-servers would severely degrade the quality of the site imo, as most of the times you guys would have to re-upload the files a lot probably due to copyright claims and whatnot. As for the Gigabit server, I don’t think its needed as of now.

Well, it ultimately comes down to donations. If I had money to donate, I surely would, but being a student and this being my final school year, I don’t get enough time to surf the internet, or watch Anime, let alone monetizing. I hope other users can donate to keep the site up, I wish I could.

    1. Even if they gives out money, I somehow dislike the idea of using thirdparty server as the place to put files and where we will download from. If the thirdparty is only adsite like adfly, then it’s ok.

  15. Im using firefox with adblock , ive , in the past. allowed everything thru but the adfly as it indeed messes with the links making it hell to cut and paste, etc.

opened the site in IE , and within 4 seconds, i had 15 windows open and downloading a show was the usual , click , wait, click wait, with a torrent.

    how ever, it worked.
I dont mind the ads, and if it eventually helps pay, im all for it.
i have donated in the past, and i plan to in the future as well.
i guess ill open the site up in IE at least once a day to help out with the pop unders and the full page ads for everyones sake

    S

    1. If you’re using Firefox, open all links in Private Browsing mode, and make sure that you revoke the rights from adblock add-ons so they cannot run in Private Browsing mode. This will give you smooth browsing in this site, just like what you’ve get from IE.

  16. I’ve been watching download sites come and go since before Napster, so here are my thoughts.

A speed limit would help, but I know most people would hate it. It would make things more even though, since no one needs 800KB per second. We can already queue up stuff to download, so slower is better. I’d suggest a maximum of 200KB but you’d need to play with the numbers to find out what works best.

Filehosts would be very useful, if you do it the right way. For the newer series, upload them to some of the better hosts (I can make a number of suggestions of which to use) and give access to the direct downloads only a month or two later. By then most links get deleted anyways, so we would always have something to fall back on. The reason I suggest doing it this way is because there are so many sources to get the newest anime from, so people shouldn’t just automatically download from you guys. I’d even go so far as to ask for people to post alternative links in the comment section (sort of like AnimeTake used to be). Sites like AnimeChiby and AnimeKens, SedotMini and MiniTheatre are good. I always go there first and download from you guys as a last resort. Yes the quality here is better (per filesize) but mini anime is still a mini format. It isn’t meant to be perfect, so accepting a bit less when you just want to see the new shows only makes sense.

I imagine it’s too easy for people these days to simply click direct downloads and not even think about costs, effort, or alternatives. This would get people to contribute and balance things out somewhat.

I’d also say not to do the upgrade and try to adjust what you have instead. I personally don’t mind the ads at all, but I guess many people had trouble with them. Perhaps have an ads on/ads off button in some account setting? That way the common visitor to the site wouldn’t just jump the gun right away and turn them off.

If you can find a way to reduce the load on the most heavily downloaded files I imagine (or hope) it would make enough of a difference.

    1. Just checked the FAQ again and you guys already had 300KB as the limit and it wasn’t enough? That’s too bad. I guess you really do have a a lot of downloaders. I set mine to 75 or 100KB usually.

Just throwing more ideas out there, what about giving out the first 2-5 downloads at the normal speed, then restricting any further ones? Again I know people hate limits, but it might help to get a handle on things. Some sites use a strict daily limit of 5 or 10 files, and that can work. They’re better than hourly limits at least.
